Serving also means thinking about the planet

Serving also means thinking about the planet.

Algar Group, across all its companies, considers the planet and the environment, developing actions aimed at preserving and keeping it alive. An example of this is its significant involvement in the preservation and sustainable use of native forests, such as the Amazon.

Through Algar Farming, the Group owns the Pacajá Farm, located in Portel, Pará. It comprises over 140,000 hectares of preserved native vegetation in the Amazon Rainforest, an area larger than the city of São Paulo.

Algar Farming practices sustainability in all its business pillars: Forestry, Agriculture, and Protein, integrating innovation and respect for the environment. Among its main sustainable initiatives are: low-carbon agriculture, circular economy, restoration of areas with native seedlings, and rational use of water resources.

In the ICT segment, Algar has been highlighted, for 10 consecutive years, as the Most Sustainable Telecom Company in the country by Exame Sustainability Magazine. The company has a Socio-environmental Committee, with representatives in all units where the company is present, and an Environmental Management System (EMS), which aims to improve risk control and avoid potential environmental liabilities.

The EMS also includes an annual audit plan that verifies the effectiveness of operational controls, the management of operational aspects and impacts, and compliance with legal requirements.

Finally, Aviva cultivates a 52-hectare eucalyptus plantation at Rio Quente Resorts and also has 49 hectares of abundant flora, woodlands, and fully preserved native vegetation.

Forest Management and Land Restoration

Serving the planet means taking responsibility for planting a more sustainable and prosperous tomorrow for future generations.

By developing certified sustainable forest management, Algar Farming has been able to create an operation that not only preserves the environment but also contributes to its prosperity.

Thus, we are able to collect wood respecting the forest's life cycle and offer carbon credits to other companies.

And nothing is wasted! In order to give a purpose to the waste from management, we transform discarded wood into furniture through Pacajá Móveis.

Algar Farming also works on land restoration in its cocoa operation in areas that were inactive, thus enabling a crop that stimulates the biodiversity of these areas. In addition, it also restores areas with native seedlings in the state of Minas Gerais.

Pacajá Furniture: products created from licensed waste.

The Algar Group is committed to preserving the Amazon for future generations, developing products from licensed waste and with designs that respect nature. For this, we rely on Pacajá Móveis, from Algar Farming.

Pacajá Móveis produces and commercializes exclusive, handcrafted, and traceable products of 100% Amazonian origin. These products are created through a sustainable process that repurposes wood residues from certified sustainable forest management.

Companies that are part of these initiatives include:

Agriculture and
Protein Production

At Algar Farming, our agricultural arm, we practice sustainability in all business areas, integrating innovation and respect for the environment.

In the Agriculture tower, where soybeans, corn, sugarcane, potatoes, sweet corn, cotton, beans, sorghum, and Tifton grass are produced, ESG is implemented through low-carbon agriculture practices such as no-till farming, crop rotation, crop-livestock integration, use of bio-inputs, and water conservation.

In the Protein tower, which focuses on sustainable models, animal welfare, nutrition, and operational efficiency, ESG is applied through protein production with rational management, encompassing everything from careful feeding and proper sanitary management to respecting the animals' natural behavior.

Furthermore, the circular economy is also valued in operations, a method that makes intensive livestock farming more sustainable by integrating livestock and agricultural operations.

UN Global Compact

The United Nations Global Compact is one of the most important private sector engagement initiatives in sustainability to promote a more inclusive and equitable global market.

With ten principles in the areas of human rights, labor relations, environment, and the fight against corruption, the Global Compact reaches more than thirteen thousand organizations in almost one hundred and sixty countries.

Algar has been a signatory since 2017, supporting 10 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), including responsible consumption and production, and clean and affordable energy.

Here, we are committed to achieving these principles and applying them in our daily operations, as well as raising awareness among associates, clients, suppliers, and our entire network of relationships.

Greenhouse Gas
Emissions Management

We seek to reconcile economic growth with environmental preservation, and one of our initiatives in this regard is our REDD+ project (acronym for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation), which has prevented the emission of tons of carbon, effectively contributing to environmental preservation. The initiative is located at Fazenda Pacajá, in the Brazilian Amazon, in the municipality of Portel, Pará – one of the largest areas of sustainable forest management in the country.

Algar Farming offers carbon credits so that other companies can contribute to the recovery and protection of forests. The purchase of carbon credits is part of international best practices for mitigating global warming. Through carbon credits, we encourage other companies to adopt clean energy and preserve the forest. It works like this: companies that prevent the emission of 1 ton of CO2 (carbon dioxide) generate this credit and can sell it to other institutions that exceed the volume of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

The other companies in the Group also have a strong commitment to this issue. One of Algar's major objectives, for example, has been to advance its environmental commitment, further reducing greenhouse gas emissions in its processes and operations by 2030. This reduction has been ongoing since the beginning of the preparation of the GHG Inventory.

Energy Consumption

The growth in energy consumption from renewable sources has a number of benefits, including: reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved energy security, and job creation. Furthermore, it is a very positive sign for the future of clean energy.

Our companies have a strong commitment to the conscious use of energy. Algar, for example, has 100% of its consumption coming from renewable sources.

Cocoa Planted Directly in the Amazon Rainforest.

Algar Farming is restoring degraded areas previously used for pasture by planting cocoa and other native forest species, a way to spread the sustainable planting model and contribute to the environment.

The project is being carried out at Fazenda Pacajá, located in Portel, Pará, in the Brazilian Amazon. The initiative involves 3,000 hectares that were previously used for pasture and are now being restored using regenerative models. The expectation is that 3,000 tons of cocoa will be produced annually.

The environmental advantages are numerous, including: strong environmental benefits, increased crop productivity, boosting cocoa cultivation in Brazil, contributing to national self-sufficiency, generating income for communities with high social vulnerability, and high added value.
